Despite streak ending loss, the “Party At Napoli’s” continues

Although the Indians suffered a rather painful 6-2 loss to the Houston Astros on Monday, it wasn’t all bad at Progressive Field. It was a whirlwind game as the Indians decided to remove Josh Tomlin from the starting pitcher spot and make it a “bullpen” game. Mike Clevenger took the mound for only his third start of the season. The former Columbus Clippers starter went one and two thirds innings, giving up a pair of walks, a pair of hits, and a run. The Tribe would go on to use eight different pitchers throughout the night, included Tomlin, who gave up 1 hit, and a strikeout in the ninth.

Josh Tomlin was originally scheduled to start, but was removed due to recent performance. Tomlin, who entered the month of August with a record of 11-3, was not able to win a single game during the month. No decision has been made whether to keep him in the rotation, or replace him.

“I’m not sure what we are going to do,” said Francona about the rotation issue. “It’s not like it’s the middle of the year, where you are putting your bullpen in jeopardy. I’ll want to talk to the guys and see what we think is best for us.”

It wasn’t all bad news though, as Mike Napoli, who had been struggling at the plate as of late, blasted his 30th Home Run of the season in the fifth inning. Napoli took advantage of a 1-0 fastball from Astros’ pitcher Mike Fiers, hitting high off the foul pole for a solo home run. However, it wouldn’t be enough to stop the Astros.

With this loss, the Indians are still able to maintain their hold on the Division lead against the Detroit Tigers.  The Tigers were victorious yesterday over the Chicago White Sox, and improved their standings. They are still 4.5 games behind the Indians.

Corey Kluber will take the mound tonight against the Astros looking to turn things around from Monday nights loss. Brad Peacock will be the starter for Houston, as he looks for his first start of the season.  Peacock was a last minute addition to the Astros rotation, replacing Dallas Keuchel, who is out with a shoulder inflamation. The game begins at 7:10PM at Progressive Field in Cleveland.
