So as many of you know, 2016 has been a whirlwind of emotions for sports fans, and entertainment fans around the country, as well as around the globe. This year we have witnessed miracles, and tragedy. Hearts have been broken, dreams have been made, and many people have pulled their hair out in anticipation of what is to come.
Here is a list of the top 10 most defining moments of 2016, whether good, bad, ugly, or just plane indescribable.
*Note: Most events on this list will be denoted with a “+” or a “-” for whether they were a good or bad event.
#10 Dubai Skyscraper (-). This should have been a clue as to how 2016 was going to go for residence of the world. Although the fire began on the 31st of December 2015, it continued to burn into the turn of the new year. Police believe that exposed wiring was the cause of the fire. But nonetheless, the flaming New Years Spectacle in Dubai comes in at number 10 on our countdown.
#9 Harambe (-). Many would say that the death of the Cincinnati Zoo’s famed gorilla would be more of a good thing than bad, considering it had a human child in it’s possession. However, the whole event in it’s entirety is a downside to 2016. Back on May 28th 2016, a young boy fell into the primate’s enclosure. Now, some videos show gorilla protecting the boy. Others make it look like the boy was in great danger. As a result, Zoo authorities shot and killed the gorilla. The death of Harambe didn’t stop there. Millions took to facebook, twitter, iFunny, reddit and other social media sites, creating memes that idolized the animal, and caused a media upstir. The incident itself, normally wouldn’t make it onto the list, but because of the result chaos and media frenzy that followed, the death of Harambe makes our list, coming in at number 9.
#8 Star Wars: The Force Awakens (+). Yes, we at Mayhem Cleveland are well aware that the movie debuted in 2015. But that wasn’t the end of it. On January 6th 2016, the movie broke the North American box office record, surpassing the $760.5 million that was once held by Avatar. Although the reviews from Star Wars fans worldwide were mixed with good and bad. Chalk this one up as a success for the Star Wars franchise. Landing them at Number 8 on our countdown.
#7 Hillary Clinton (Neither + nor -) Although Hillary didn’t win the presidency, she did accomplish something remarkable. On July 26th, 2016 Hillary Clinton became the first woman in U.S. history to be nominated for president by a major U.S. presidential party. Even though she would go on to lose to Donald Trump in November, Hillary left her mark on the political process. Many non-Hillary supporters believe that she won the nomination unjustly, but that is a matter of speculation. Through many health issues, and questionable moves, Hillary Clinton stumbles her way onto our countdown at number 7.
#6 David Bowie & Alan Rickman. (-) It is said that celebrity deaths come in 3’s. Accompanied by the death of Rene Angelil (Husband of Celine Dion), the deaths of Alan Rickman and David Bowie stunned the world. Days apart from each other, the loss of the entertainment icon’s touched the hearts of millions. Bowie, January 10th, finally lost his 18 month battle with cancer. He had released a musical album shortly before his death. Even more were pained by the loss of Rickman on January 14th. The famed “Harry Potter”, as well as “Alice” actor was loved by many for his portrayals of Snape, and the Cheshire cat. Both celebrities lost their lives to cancer, and both died at age 69. This tragedy finds its way into our hearts, and our countdown at number 6.
